attraction
India's second largest mangrove ecosystem, a living wall between the delta and the Bay of Bengal.
Bhitarkanika is India’s second largest mangrove ecosystem after the Sundarbans, formed where the Brahmani, Baitarani and Dhamra rivers meet the sea.
More than 60 mangrove species grow here, including sundari, bani and the rare Heritiera. Their stilt roots and pneumatophores trap sediment, nurse fish and prawn stocks, and absorb the force of cyclones before they reach inland villages.
Walking the boardwalk at Dangmal or drifting slowly through a narrow creek at high tide is the quietest, and often the best, part of the whole journey.
