Bhitarkanika holds India's largest population of giant estuarine crocodiles, some growing beyond 20 feet.
The estuarine or salt water crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the living emblem of Bhitarkanika. The creeks here shelter the largest population of the species in India, and a handful of individuals measure over 20 feet from snout to tail.
Boat safaris along the Brahmani, Baitarani and Dhamra creek systems are the surest way to see them: basking on the mud banks at low tide, drifting with only their eyes above the water, or sliding into the channel as the boat passes.
The same waterways are home to the water monitor lizard, the king cobra and the Indian python, so keep your camera ready between crocodile sightings.
